Myopia (or Shortsighted)
Myopia is a condition where objects need to be close to be seen clearly. If it is due to heredity, myopia starts early in life. People with this condition can usually see objects that are close, but they have difficulty seeing objects that are far away. Myopia is the opposite of hyperopia. In myopia, the eyeball or the anatomical structure of the eyeball is longer than normal. This causes light rays to focus in front of the retina, resulting in blurry vision when looking at distant objects. Myopia can be corrected with glasses and contact lenses or laser vision correction. Laser vision correction is only recommended for people over the age of eighteen with stable vision, when the eye is mature.
To correct myopia with glasses, the lenses used are thicker at the edges and thinner in the middle. This is called a concave lens, and a high-index lens can be used to improve the appearance in higher prescriptions.
People with myopia are at increased risk for retinal detachment. Signs and symptoms of retinal detachment are flickering lights, black floaters, or a curtain phenomenon on vision. The risk of retinal detachment is usually less than 3%.

Presbyopia
As people age, usually in their forties, a condition called presbyopia develops. Presbyopia is the inability to focus on objects that are close to the eye. People often notice that it becomes more difficult to read or use a computer. Bifocals or reading glasses are one way to address this condition. Windsor, ON N8T 2W7
Presbyopia is a natural result of the aging process. There is no known cure, although researchers have been searching for a treatment. Even if someone has never had vision problems before, they may still develop presbyopia. It may appear to happen suddenly, but it actually happens over a long period of time. Symptoms include having to hold objects at a distance to see clearly, eye strain, fatigue, and headaches from working close together. Windsor, ON N8W 3T5
Dominion Optometry specializes in children's vision and offers a myopia management program that includes low-dose atropine therapy, lifestyle counseling, and special contact lenses. Astigmatism
Astigmatism Sometimes, the cornea is irregularly shaped, causing the eye to focus objects on two different areas of the retina. This is called astigmatism. In order for the cornea to bend light correctly, it should be dome-shaped, like a basketball. With astigmatism, the cornea Windsor, ON N8S 4E5 is shaped more like a football. This causes the views to overlap when looking at objects near and far.
The cause of astigmatism ON N8X 3N9 is unknown. Astigmatism is often associated with nearsightedness or farsightedness and is usually present from birth. It can be hereditary or caused by factors such as pressure on the cornea, improper posture, or increased use of the eyes due to close work.
Mild astigmatism usually does not require correction. Moderate to severe astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.
1. Understanding Computer Vision Syndrome
Computer Vision Syndrome is becoming increasingly common as more people spend hours each day using computers, tablets, and smartphones. Symptoms such as blurry vision, headaches, eye strain, and dry eyes can develop after extended screen use. Poor posture and improper monitor placement may also contribute to neck and shoulder pain. An optometrist can diagnose the condition and recommend personalized treatments to help reduce discomfort and protect long-term eye health.
2. Signs You May Have Computer Vision Syndrome
Many people experience eye discomfort without realizing it may be caused by digital screens. Common symptoms include blurry vision, headaches, dry eyes, and difficulty focusing after computer use. Some individuals also develop neck and shoulder pain due to poor posture while working. If these symptoms continue or worsen, a professional eye examination can help identify the cause and provide effective solutions.
3. How Screen Time Affects Your Eyes
Staring at a computer screen for long periods forces your eyes to work harder than usual. Digital screens can reduce blinking frequency, leading to dryness and irritation. Glare, poor lighting, and improper screen positioning may increase eye strain and fatigue. Regular eye exams and healthy screen habits can significantly reduce the impact of prolonged digital device use.
4. Treatment Options for Computer Vision Syndrome
Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome depends on the severity of symptoms and the patient’s visual needs. An optometrist may recommend specialized computer glasses designed to reduce eye strain and improve visual comfort. Updated prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses may also help. Along with professional treatment, lifestyle adjustments such as improving posture and taking regular screen breaks can make a major difference.
5. Why Proper Computer Setup Matters
A poorly positioned computer monitor can contribute to eye strain, headaches, and body discomfort. Experts recommend placing the monitor slightly below eye level and about 20 to 28 inches away from the eyes. Anti-glare screens and proper lighting can further reduce stress on the eyes. Small ergonomic adjustments can greatly improve comfort during long workdays.
6. The Importance of Regular Eye Breaks
Continuous screen use can leave your eyes feeling tired and dry. One of the best ways to reduce strain is to follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Taking frequent breaks and blinking more often can help keep the eyes refreshed and moisturized. These simple habits can reduce discomfort and improve productivity.
7. Specialized Glasses for Computer Users
Standard eyeglasses may not always provide the best support for digital screen use. Specialized computer glasses are designed to reduce glare, improve focus, and minimize eye fatigue. They can be especially beneficial for people who spend several hours each day working on computers. An optometrist can determine the most suitable prescription based on your daily screen habits and vision needs.
8. Can Existing Eye Conditions Make Symptoms Worse?
People with conditions such as astigmatism, farsightedness, presbyopia, or diabetic eye disease may experience more severe computer vision symptoms. Even those who already wear glasses or contact lenses can struggle with prolonged screen use. Proper diagnosis and updated vision correction can help relieve symptoms and improve comfort while using digital devices.
9. Preventing Digital Eye Strain at Work
Office workers often spend most of the day looking at screens, making digital eye strain a common workplace issue. Adjusting lighting, reducing glare, and maintaining proper posture can help prevent discomfort. Employees should also take regular breaks and blink frequently to avoid dry eyes. Preventive eye care plays an important role in maintaining healthy vision in today’s digital world.
10. Protecting Your Vision in the Digital Age
Digital devices are now part of everyday life, but excessive screen time can negatively affect eye health. Symptoms like headaches, blurry vision, and eye fatigue should not be ignored. With professional eye care, proper computer habits, and the right vision correction, many people can successfully manage Computer Vision Syndrome. Early treatment can help protect your vision and improve daily comfort.
